Celery Juice: Fad or newfound superfood?

Well one of the latest fads is back and Juicer sales are back up. Juicing has become a thing again. Yes. The second wave of taking all of the fiber and compounds out and throwing them away is a popular thing now. Sigh. If anyone can remember the Netflix documentary called Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. It had people buying more produce than ever and throwing out old produce at an astonishing rate. All in the name of good health and a lot of people quit eating shit and started to drink juice. This in turn got some people to lose weight and feel better. AWESOME. However, if you break it down, the amount of produce it took to get one glass of green garlic lemongrass lavender green ginger spritz juice would have kept you full the entire day. Plus all sorts of fiber and phytonutrients would go into your body vs. the trash can.

The latest fad is celery juice. The Wonderful Brand New juice of the year is celery juice. Has anyone ever eaten celery before? Yes. For centuries, and theres plenty of fiber there but NOOOOO we have to find a way to HACK the latest fad and juice a bunch of it. Great. However, missing that fiber along with other compounds and you may be missing the point. Celery has plenty of micronutrients plus polyacetylenes, that are chemoprotective compounds. Polyacetylenes can remove free radicals and lower the risk of cancer formation, especially cancer of the intestine, breast cancer and forms of Leukemia. Ok, so we are on to something here! If it is truly anti-inflammatory, then have at it. Being in a constant state of inflammation increases your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and cancer. The other micronutrients, like Vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin C, calcium, potassium, Folate, vitamin K, and Fiber are all beneficial and shouldn’t be disregarded. My personal take on it is leave nothing in that waste bin for that vegetable. Yes, you can juice a big bag and get a small glass of juice but I feel that a good amount of those superfood qualities will end up going in the trash. Eat your vegetables. Yes, even that pesky Kale that was the fad a couple years ago.
